If I told my eight year old self I would be getting married in Puerto Rico, I probably would have had to ask where it was on a map. Then I would have asked what kind of cake we were having.
Rincon, Puerto Rico is a small, surf town on the western side of the Island. It is where my now-husband and I have lived together for the past three years - though he has about ten years time there prior. It was where we had chosen to start our relationship together and it was where we chose to make ourselves a family as husband and wife.
Our friends and family traveled to share in our day together despite mosquitoes and no cell service. My husband caught most of the fish on the menu that night, we screen-printed the décor ourselves, our local bakery made the cake, and our dear friend hosted us at her beachfront restaurant where we frequented for dinners + brunches.
Rather than describe the day in detail, I felt it better to share what I learned. I learned that weddings are not all that you imagine as a little girl. They are not often like you see on television. I didn’t “say yes to the dress” with six girls by my side helping me decide. I bought the first one I tried on in a warehouse in downtown Los Angeles where the designer happened to be working that day. I didn’t have a set color scheme. I didn’t have to choose bridesmaid dresses or have fittings. I didn’t wear something blue. I had friends. I had family. I had the sand under my feet and my love by my side. I think that was all that mattered. And I learned that even with a massive downpour, the rain will stop just before you walk down the aisle. It seems like what most people remember about weddings is the food, the music and the laughter.
Oh, and eight year old me, it was vanilla coconut cake.
